How to Care for a Suit
After wearing a suit, empty its pockets, hang it with shoulder support and give it room to air. Clean and press according to the finished garment’s care instructions and condition. Address stains and loose components promptly, before the next wear.
Start with the garment’s care instructions
Different cloths and constructions require different handling. A wool business suit, a velvet dinner jacket and a silk blend should not automatically receive the same treatment. Read the care information supplied with the garment and ask your clothier before applying a cleaning or finishing method you have not used on it.
Fiber, finish, lining and construction all affect suitable treatment. Our fabric guide explains those material choices; the finished garment’s instructions guide its care.
Support the shape between wears
Use a hanger that supports the jacket shoulders without distorting them. Empty the pockets before hanging so their contents do not pull on the cloth. Allow space around the suit rather than compressing it tightly among other garments.
Let a worn garment air in a suitable dry place before enclosing it for storage. Giving it time between wears allows you to inspect the cloth and notice a loose button or small mark before the next occasion. Rotate suits when possible to leave time for airing and inspection.
| After-wear observation | Sensible next step | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary surface dust | Use a suitable gentle garment brush if appropriate | Aggressive brushing on delicate surfaces |
| A fresh mark or spill | Follow care guidance and seek professional advice promptly | Rubbing or applying an untested product |
| Creasing after travel | Review the cloth’s finishing guidance | Uncontrolled heat or a direct hot iron |
| A loose button or opening seam | Arrange an assessment before further strain | Continuing to pull on the affected area |
| A persistent fit change | Ask for an on-body review | Assuming cleaning will resolve a pattern issue |
Clean when the garment needs cleaning
Clean according to wear, marks, odors and the cloth’s care requirements. A fixed number of wears is a poor guide across different garments and routines. Use a professional cleaner when the garment’s instructions call for professional care, and identify any stain or unusual material before treatment.
Tell the cleaner when a jacket and trousers form a matching suit so the treatment can be planned appropriately. Keep personal experiments with solvents, heat and soaking away from an unfamiliar cloth. For a fresh spill, avoid rubbing it into the surface and seek suitable guidance.
Pressing should preserve the design
The jacket’s lapels, chest and seams have intentional shape. A flat, forceful press can work against that shape. If you are unsure how to handle travel creases, ask the showroom or an experienced professional rather than improvising with high heat or prolonged steaming.
Check the garment again after cleaning or pressing. If something appears changed, explain what you observe before further work is attempted.
Store carefully between seasons
Put the suit away clean and completely dry, using the care method specified for the garment. Support the jacket on a suitable shaped hanger and use an appropriate breathable garment bag with enough room for the shoulders and lapels. Keep the storage space clean and avoid compressing the suit between other garments.
Check stored clothing periodically, including seams, cuffs, pockets and folds. Look for moisture, new holes or signs of insects. If you suspect pest damage, seek prompt advice from a professional cleaner or textile specialist before treatment. Cedar or lavender scent is not a substitute for inspection and appropriate pest control.
Seasonal storage and travel place different demands on a garment. Our packing guide explains how to arrange a jacket and trousers inside a case.
Address small issues early
A repair is easier to discuss when the affected area can be assessed clearly. Alterations and repairs explains the review process; Our Fit Guarantee covers complimentary fit alterations for all custom garments during the 60 days after final pickup.
The same information helps with your next order. Tell your clothier how often you wore the suit and where it needed attention. At an Enzo showroom, that feedback helps your clothier select fabric for your next garment.
Questions and answers
How often should I dry clean a suit?
Follow the garment’s care instructions and its actual condition. There is no single schedule suited to every cloth, wearer and frequency of use.
Can I use a steamer on every suit?
Do not assume so. Cloth, finishing and construction affect suitable treatment. Check the garment’s instructions or ask a professional before applying heat or steam.
What should I do with a small stain?
Avoid rubbing or applying an untested cleaning product. Identify the mark and seek advice appropriate to the cloth promptly, following the garment’s care instructions.
Should I wait for a loose button to come off?
No. Have the attachment assessed before the area is placed under further strain, and retain any detached component to show the person handling the repair.
