Inside Our Jackets

Full Canvas Construction at Enzo Custom

Structure defines the garment long before it is worn.

Every Enzo Custom jacket is built on floating full-canvas construction — horsehair, wool, and cotton layered independently — allowing the garment to move naturally, settle over time, and be fully serviced for decades.

Its character is established beneath the cloth — through the internal architecture that determines how it holds shape, how it moves, and how it endures over time.

At Enzo Custom, every jacket is built on a floating canvas-based structure, calibrated to the individual pattern and the selected cloth.

Our atelier has constructed full-canvas jackets across private showrooms in the United States.

Full Canvas Construction

The result is not immediate. It develops.

Full canvas construction remains the architectural standard in high-level tailoring.

A structured layer — typically composed of horsehair, wool, and cotton — is suspended between the outer cloth and the lining. Unlike fused construction, this canvas is not bonded. It remains free, allowing the jacket to respond naturally to movement and wear.

Movement and Response

This is what allows a jacket to maintain presence without rigidity.

Because the canvas is not fixed, it works in tandem with the cloth.

Movement is absorbed, not resisted. The jacket follows the body rather than forcing it into a predetermined form. Over time, the internal structure settles, creating continuity between garment and wearer.

Hand Shaping the Chest

Canvas alone does not create form. It must be shaped.

Through controlled heat, steam, and pressure, the chest is developed to introduce curvature and balance. This shaping determines how the jacket will sit across the torso and how it will recover after wear.

The process is gradual. Sections are worked, rested, and refined until structure and cloth respond as one.

Internal Architecture

Material informs structure. Structure informs drape.

A jacket is not a single layer, but an architecture.

At Enzo Custom, this architecture is calibrated to both the individual pattern and the selected fabric. It may include floating canvas of varying density, hand-shaped lapels, dedicated shoulder structure, and individually aligned sleeve pitch.

Cloth Determines Construction

Construction does not exist independently of cloth.

A heavier fabric requires greater internal support to maintain line. A lighter cloth demands restraint — structure that supports without overwhelming.

Because garments are cut only after fabric selection, internal architecture is adjusted to fiber, weight, and weave.

In production tailoring, fabric adapts to structure. In custom tailoring, structure adapts to fabric.

Balance and Distribution

This is not a visible feature. It is a felt one.

Balance is established before the garment is assembled.

Front length, back length, chest distribution, and shoulder alignment are determined at the pattern stage, then reinforced through internal construction.

A properly balanced jacket remains centered without adjustment.

Longevity

A floating canvas jacket is built to be worn for decades, not seasons.

Because the structure is not bonded, it can be opened, reshaped, and serviced over time. Garments are constructed to be altered, re-pressed, and maintained as the wearer evolves.

Construction Begins With the Pattern

Structure follows the pattern.

The internal build of a jacket is determined by how it is drafted — how balance, posture, and proportion are established before construction begins.

To understand how the pattern defines the garment.

Refinement Through Fittings

The process is controlled. The objective is precision, not iteration.

A jacket is refined through controlled fittings until it settles without resistance.

Position Within Tailoring

Custom tailoring and bespoke share the same structural principle: pattern-first construction.

What sits beneath the cloth is what endures.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is full canvas construction?

A floating canvas structure where internal layers remain free, allowing natural drape and long-term shape retention.

What is the difference between full canvas and fused jackets?

Fused jackets rely on adhesive bonding. Full canvas garments use independent layers that move and adapt.

How long does a full canvas jacket last?

A properly constructed canvas jacket can last decades with proper care and maintenance.

Can a full canvas jacket be altered or repaired?

Yes. Because the structure is not bonded, it can be reshaped, repaired, and refined over time.

Does Enzo Custom offer half-canvas construction?

Enzo Custom constructs full-canvas and half-canvas jackets. Half-canvas is offered on select lightweight summer cloths where full structure would overwhelm the fabric. Your maker will advise based on cloth selection.
